The Iowa High School Athletic Association today has released their first RPI rankings for the 2019 high school football season. In the rankings, the Bears come in at #5 with an RPI of 0.6867 (range of 0-1). The top five teams:

  1. Van Meter 0.7380
  2. Panorama 0.7102
  3. West Lyon 0.7055
  4. Western Christian, Hull 0.6919
  5. West Branch 0.6867

The full Class 1A rankings can be viewed on the IHSAA website.

The IHSAA began using RPI just last season to determine its at-large playoff qualifiers. District champions, however, receive automatic qualification into the playoffs but can use the RPI as another indicator of success. The RPI formula is as follows:

  • Your Own Winning Percentage (37.5%)
  • Your Opponents’ Composite Winning Percentage (37.5%)
  • Your Opponents’ Opponents’ Composite Winning Percentage (25%)
  • RPI = (.375 x WP) + (.375 x OWP) + (.250 x OOWP)

Last season, West Branch, runner-up in District 4, qualified for the playoffs by having the highest RPI of the non-automatic qualifiers. This season, however, currently in the District 4 lead, the Bears are playing for an automatic qualification.

For the rest of the season, the IHSAA will release updated rankings on Monday. More information about the RPI can be found at the IHSAA's website.
