Captain's Corner: First week of school meant game week

Hello Bear fans! This week we will talk about the first week of school, preparing for West Liberty and game day.

This past week was the first week of school, meaning us athletes had to become student-athletes once again. With school comes early morning lifting. Each Monday and Wednesday for the rest of the season we will have lifting at 6:30 AM. Phil Johnson, the strength coach, does a great job at getting us ready to perform at our best that Friday night. The team has been working hard in the weight room every session to get physically and mentally stronger.

This week we had to lock in on our game plan for West Liberty. We only had three practices and a walk through before our game. We put finishing touches on our blitzes and put in our two minute offense. The motto for the week had been limit the turnovers, penalties, and mental mistakes.

Finally after three weeks of practice game day was here. All the talk in the school was about Football Friday. You go through school and you do your pre game routine and then all of the sudden it's game time. We came out strong in the first half executing our offense and doing our assignments on defense. After practicing against your own guys for weeks it felt good to go against somebody else.

We finished strong ending up winning the game 40-20. We made a few mistakes that we will have to work out in practice this week, but overall it was a good first game for us to show what kind of team we have. Next week the Bears take on West Burlington-Notre Dame for our home opener. Hope to see you all there.

Go Bears,
Cooper Kabela
