Go West Young Man: Giese a Hawkeye

When his family moved west from Wilton to West Branch in the summer of 2014, little did Jacob Giese know what direction the next move would be.

10 miles west.

The All-State Defensive Tackle for West Branch has accepted an offer to be a preferred walk-on at the University of Iowa. He rebuffed a scholarship offer from South Dakota, as well as the opportunity to be a preferred walk-on at Iowa State. Northern Iowa was also in the picture.

Former Bear Bo Bower (WBHS Class of 2013) followed the same pathway as a PFWO at Iowa, and has now earned a full scholarship and started all 12 games at outside linebacker.

Giese, though, says his decision had little to do with Bower.

"It makes you think about the similarities." Jacob says. "But I have to make my own way and work hard."

Defensive Line coach for the Hawkeyes, Reece Morgan, was the main contact throughout the process. However, the big guy (Jacob is 6'3", 280 pounds) got to meet the big guy this week.

"Coach (Kirk) Ferentz is a great guy." Giese exclaims. "We talked more about wrestling and life than football. He told me he likes my work ethic."

Jacob feels that work ethic is mainly from his personal drive. He says that moving to West Branch and working in the weight room with Phil Johnson played significant roles in his career progressing.

"Phil and Coach Pedersen are great people who make you get the most out of yourself." says the 2014 Class 1A, District 5 Defensive Lineman of the Year award winner. "They teach me that working hard and preparation are what will get me to the next level."

It's safe to say he is happy about his move to West Branch. "Moving here was a great decision for us. I'm a Bear for life."

Jacob is the son of Richard and Sheri Giese.

Congratulations to Jacob and best wishes in your future as a Student-Athlete at the University of Iowa.

Once a Bear, Always a Bear.
